Rassie Erasmus has defended his decision to overhaul the Springboks line-up for Saturday’s Rugby Championship rematch with the All Blacks in Wellington, insisting the changes are about opportunity rather than punishment.
Following last weekend’s 24-17 defeat at Eden Park, Erasmus named his team earlier than usual, revealing seven changes to the starting XV. Five of those are in a refreshed backline: Ethan Hooker earns just his third start on the wing, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu comes in at fly-half, Aphelele Fassi returns at full-back, while Canan Moodie shifts to centre alongside Damian Willemse. Cheslin Kolbe is the only other back retained from Auckland.
In the forwards, Jasper Wiese returns from suspension and Lood de Jager moves up from the bench to start.
During the online press briefing, Erasmus was asked whether some players’ poor performances in Auckland had “forced his hand.” The head coach pushed back, calling it “a very loaded question.” He admitted that both players and coaches, himself included, had fallen short but stressed that the replacements had brought fresh energy.
Reflecting on the loss, Erasmus likened the final stages to South Africa’s 2023 World Cup pool defeat to Ireland, where the team fought back but couldn’t finish. “The guys that came on brought a lot of energy and fight. After 15 minutes we were 14-0 down, but from there they only scored another 10 points. Still, we lost the game, and that’s the bottom line,” he said.
The selection signals a bold move toward youth as South Africa look to test depth and inject new momentum against their fiercest rivals.
