Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has criticized All Blacks lock Tupou Vaa’i for what he described as over-the-top celebrations during the win over South Africa at Eden Park.
Pietersen, who grew up in South Africa and openly supports the Springboks, called the young lock an “embarrassment” to rugby after he was seen celebrating turnovers in Saturday’s Rugby Championship match.
Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Pietersen blasted the behavior: “Celebrating a turnover like you’ve won the World Cup is embarrassing! I hope the All Blacks had their review and that the coach explained this. Leave that to other teams.”
The outspoken former batsman doubled down after his remarks made headlines, insisting Vaa’i’s actions went against the All Blacks’ traditions of humility and respect. “He was an embarrassment to All Blacks rugby, which is built on respect and tradition. Celebrating turnovers like that is utter nonsense,” he posted.
When asked why he hadn’t named Vaa’i directly, Pietersen responded that he didn’t know the player’s name but warned that such behavior, so early in a career, could cut it short at the top level. To suggestions that he was simply upset by South Africa’s defeat, Pietersen replied: “Not whinging. I’ve always respected the All Blacks. I just don’t want to see this kid ruin their brand.”
