Springboks legend Victor Matfield has voiced his frustration over what he sees as refereeing inconsistencies in South Africa’s 24-17 defeat to the All Blacks at Eden Park.

Despite leading 14-3 at half-time, the Boks were unable to hold off New Zealand in Round Three of the Rugby Championship, and much of the post-match debate has focused on referee Karl Dickson’s decisions. Matfield joined that discussion, arguing that the two sides were not judged equally in key moments.

He pointed to Kwagga Smith’s yellow card for an infringement near the Springboks’ try-line, contrasting it with New Zealand conceding multiple penalties inside their own 22 without similar consequences. Matfield also argued that South Africa’s dominance at the scrum was not fairly rewarded.

Speaking on The Rivals podcast alongside former All Blacks star Sir John Kirwan, the 2007 World Cup winner said: “The biggest games need the best referee, and unfortunately, we didn’t get it. New Zealand got away with a few scrums where they dived over, but when Thomas du Toit’s knee touched the ground, it was a penalty immediately. There were about three penalties we didn’t get.”

Matfield also highlighted issues at the breakdown, particularly on New Zealand’s own ball: “On their kicks, they were on their knees and elbows at the ruck — that should be an instant penalty. You can’t counter-ruck that. I think that’s something Rassie will definitely bring up with the referee this weekend.”
